Paolo Borsarelli

Paolo BorsarelliBorn in Turin, he studied under Enzo Ferrarsi at the Conservatorio there, earned his Diploma with a perfect score and was assigned the "Cuneo" prize for the best results. He was also awarded the grand prize at the Rassegna Nazionale "Città di Genova". Subsequently, he was accepted into the class of Ludwig Streicher at the Musik-Hochschule in Vienna where he specialized for three years thanks to a grant from the Associazione Musicale "De Sono".

From 1992 to 1994 he was Principal Double Bass with the International Symphony Orchestra (Music by the Red Sea Festival) conducted by Lorin Maazel in Israel. He was invited to perform on those occasions with Shmuel Ashkenasi, Tabea Zimmermann, David Geringas, Bruno Canino, Frans Helmersonn, and soloists of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra for the chamber music season.

As Principal Double Bass playing under the conductor Michel Plasson, he has collaborated intensely with the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse with which he has taken part in many European tours and appeared in prestigious concert halls (Berlin, Cologne, Paris, Orange, Zurich) and has made numerous broadcasts for Radio Classique and recordings on EMI and Virgin labels.

In January 2003 he held a master class at the 12th Edition of the Double Bass Symposium at the University of Georgia (USA) where he performed a recital.

He is a regular guest of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra as Principal Double Bass under the direction of Claudio Abbado, Daniel Harding, and Pierre Boulez and has taken part in numerous tours appearing at the most prestigious venues in Europe, South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan, in addition to collaborating on six recordings for Deutsche Grammophon.

He was invited by the Mahler Chamber Orchestra to perform the solo part in Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kijé conducted by Claudio Abbado in the October 2004 concert in Ferrara.
Maestro Claudio Abbado invited him to join the Lucerne Festival Orchestra with which he has appeared in Lucerne (KKL), London (BBC PROMS), and New York (Carnegie Hall) and has collaborated on a DVD recording.

He teaches double bass at the Conservatorio Statale di Musica di Cuneo.
